📖 About This Campground

Box Canyon Campground in Island Park Idaho is part of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest (Forest Service) with 18 first come first served tent and RV camping sites operated by a concessionaire. Several short trails that leave the Box Canyon Trail to access the Henry's Fork renowned for the large rainbow trout that inhabit its waters. Artificial lures and flies with a single barbless hook can be used while fishing this "catch and release" segment of the river. The Box Canyon stretch of river is also a favorite for rafting and canoeing. Although not a "whitewater" stretch, Box Canyon does offer some challenge. It does have "Class Two" rapids and should not be attempted by inexperienced canoeist. To launch your canoes or rafts, take the road just north of Pond's Lodge (Island Park Dam Road) and follow the signs to the launch area. The average float from the boat launch to Last Chance takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours. There is an easy hiking trail of three miles in length that takes off from the Box Canyon Campground and follows along the rim of the canyon. This trail provides a scenic view for photographers and outdoorsman. Water and pit toilets available. Access road can be rough washboard gravel that is dusty. This campground is often empty with many sites available. It is a single loop access road with sites that can accommodate most sized RVs. Fire rings, picnic tables, water spigots and vault toilets. There are many miles of off-roading trails around this campground. ATVs are not allowed within the campground but there is a designated parking area just outside the campground.
