Buckhorn State Park offers spacious, well-maintained campsites and a clean modern bathhouse and showers. The park's lake and sandy beach are popular for swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking, with a fishing dock, beach volleyball and several walking trails and an observation tower. West backpacking sites require roughly a 0.9-mile walk from the lot (carts and porta-potties are provided along the route). A common downside is heavy mosquitoes at times - many visitors advise strong DEET-based repellent and protective clothing - though wind or a campfire can help. Overall it's family-friendly and quiet on weekdays, with good access by land or boat.
