- Camping: The Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground offers 30 sites nestled in pine woods, suitable for tents and RVs. Amenities include bathrooms, showers, and a dumping station. The camping season begins in mid-April and ends on Columbus Day. Reservations can be made through Reserve America.
- Hiking: The forest features trails such as the Henry Buck Trail, which starts at the old bridge site on West River Road and leads to the ruins of an old cheese box mill, offering scenic overlooks along the way.
- Boating and Fishing: The West Branch of the Farmington River provides opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and trout fishing. Note that swimming is not permitted in the river.
- Winter Sports: During the winter months, the area is popular for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Historical Significance:
Established in 1927 with an initial gift of 213 acres from the American Legion, the forest was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It serves as an example of proper forest management practices observed by U.S. soldiers in Europe during World War I.
