War Ridge/Backus Mountain is a small, free, primitive campground atop a ridge with great night skies and a cooling summer breeze. About 8–10 gravel sites have picnic tables and fire pits; the only facility is a single porta‑potty. The access road is gravel and the turnoff is not well marked, so follow reliable coordinates rather than map apps. The area is secluded and often quiet, though some visitors reported unfriendly neighbors or noisy off‑road traffic on occasion. Cell reception can be spotty (AT&T tended to be best); bring water, supplies, and bear spray.
