I had a great time camping in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Monument Campground is one of 3 campgrounds in the Preserve. This is primitive camping - no hookups (electric, water, sewer). There is one pit toilet and one bathhouse which does have running water. The camp sites surround the square lake. I saw several alligators in the lake even out on the bank. Lot's of birds. While there I arrived on a clear night and saw soooo many stars, I see why this is a popular star gazing place. The bugs are pretty bad in the evening, but during the day it was pretty windy so not so much. I also took a hike with the Rangers through a Cypress Dome, it was truly an amazing experience.

What campers say
Monument Lake Campground is a small, well-kept site of lakeside campsites popular for wildlife viewing (several alligators are commonly present). Sites circle the lake, offering varying shade and roomy setups for tents or RVs, but there are no electric/water/sewer hookups, so plan to fill water elsewhere and expect generator use. The bathhouse is modern with flushing toilets and a single shower per sex; potable water is available though some find the taste off. The park is generally quiet at night with dark‑sky rules, though proximity to Tamiami Trail can bring occasional road noise and dust on gravel roads. Friendly hosts and good cell signal were mentioned.
