What a lovely place to spend some time camping in the San Diego area. Excellent Verizon 4G signal and amazing sunsets and sunrises. Regarding the mountain biking it is amazing here. I was able to do a powerful 1 hour ride that climbed to the top of the big mountain to the right. We were here during rainy season which was not a big deal except if you had to go to the hookup side of the trailer; the mud was pretty bad over there. A benefit of the rain was how green everything was = amazing. One morning I captured a beautiful photo of the rays of the rising sun.

The park staff is nice. They are not lenient on their “extra vehicle” rules so make sure if you can tow a vehicle you do otherwise it is $5 per night extra!. Excellent space between sites. We were in 144 which was a nicely situated backin with a great view of the mountains. Our departure date had us leaving right in the middle of the big rain storm so we moved sites to wait out the rain. The second site was number 69 which is a pull thru; it has a very steep exit grade but otherwise was great.

The park, as we learned from a few neighbors, is popular for guests of the Thousand Trails Pio Pico Park to use as their “1 week out” stay. A lot of the RVs were there for a week and then left. This explained why it was so hard for us to find a site for more than a week at a time.

We paid on average $38 per night for a 3 week stay and enjoyed every second.

$33 per night with a 21 day max stay limit in a beautiful San Diego County Park with a majestic view looking back over Bonita and Chula Vista toward the San Diego Bay this is Sweetwater Summit Campground and is easily the best campground or RV park in San Diego. Verizon 4G is great along with 3G too. It was smart of them to set a 21-day day limit otherwise there would never be any sites. There are probably at least 50 miles of bicycle and hiking trails accessible right from the campground. You can drop down off the mountain and ride along the park to the path that follows the river to the Bay or you can ride past Sweetwater Reservoir and climb the second highest peak in the area. And these trails are open to hikers and horseback riders too. The pull thru sites and roads will fit most any RVs and the tent sites are nice too. Some people may not like the constant air traffic flying overhead including planes landing San Diego International Airport and the occasional Convoy of Marine or Navy helicopters… us plane lovers enjoyed it. When the jumbos would come in it seemed they were close enough to touch!

Shh… don’t tell anyone else about this place. An absolute hidden gem in the hills above Chula Vista. 15 minutes to downtown San Diego and the bay this county park is home to recently upgraded 50 amp full hookup pull thru and back in camping. Excellent mountain biking and hiking from the campground, fishing on the lake, and 4G Verizon signal all for $30 per day. Follow directions to the park as provided on website; GPS may not route properly given their recent upgrades.

Park Description

Sweetwater Summit Campground in Bonita California overlooks the Sweetwater Valley and offers full hookup RV sites and tent sites. A recreational lake, hiking and biking trails, a reservable meeting hall overlooking the lake, water play area, two playgrounds, horseshoes and tons of family fun are found up near the campground. Down below there is an 18 hole golf course, equestrian areas, ball fields and a greenway. This is a great location to visit San Diego and the Bay from with reasonable rates and easy access for any size RV.

RV sites come in many sizes with large pull thrus, scenic pull thrus with majestic west facing views and terraced sites overlooking the valley to the south. The original section has green grass and trees best suited to smaller RVs and tents. The new area has 50 amp hookups and is open with natural brush and no trees.

Use care navigating to the park as you will be passing through neighborhoods.
