What campers say
Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park offers well-preserved Gold Rush–era remains and a small museum set amid dramatic mined landscapes, creeks and mountain views. Trails range from well-groomed to rough; some routes have downed trees or overgrown sections, while at least one path to the diggins is relatively accessible. Campgrounds are generally clean and quiet, though some sites sit close together and offer little shade. Expect active wildlife, including black bears, so store food securely; biting insects can be a nuisance. The park rewards visitors interested in history and scenery, but be prepared for variable trail conditions and summer heat.
