Ess Lake State Forest Campground is a quiet, rustic spot centered on a clear, small lake well suited to kayaking, small boats and shore fishing. Campsites are generous and wooded, with functional amenities like outhouses, manual water pumps, picnic tables, newer fire rings and a boat launch. There are only a handful of true lakeside sites and no RV hookups or dump station, so come prepared. Expect limited shade in the heat of the day. Nearby Hillman offers basic services a few miles away and Alpena is roughly a 30-minute drive for additional supplies and services.
