A US Forest Service Campground operated by a concessionaire. Conveniently located right off state route 6 just on the outskirts of Warren PA. 58 sites in two loops, one with electric sites ( 1-42 ) and one non-electric ( 43-58 ). The campground loops have paved roads, the campsites are hard packed gravel, some with a little grass surface mixed in.

*** Warning*** As you drive around the loops, there are “speed bumps”. Not your normal speed bumps, but elongated ones stretching 6′-8′ long. If not paying attention, you will bounce your tow vehicle enough to slap the bottom of your hitch on the pavement.

The campsites are average sized with about half larger / deeper. A few of the campsites with more grass surface than gravel, tended to be softer and muddy. All sites are level…there is a one mile flat hiking trail that loops around the whole campground perimeter along the Allegheny River and the Brokenstraw River.

Dump station is easy to get to. The one shower house was well kept and clean. About a mile east of the campground on route 6 is an excellent Visitor Center, well stocked with information for the whole Allegheny National Forest area covering NW. PA.

Overall, more of a convenient stop over location, than a scenic spot.

Buckaloons Recreation Area is located on the west bank of the Allegheny River and is an access point for canoeing the Allegheny River Island Wilderness, which lies in the stretch of the river between Buckaloons and Tionesta.

Buckaloons is surrounded on three sides by bodies of water including, Irvine Run to the west, Brokenstraw Creek to the south, and the Allegheny River to the east.

In addition to the one-lane concrete plank boat launch, there is a 1-mile hardened interpretive trail surrounding the entire recreation site and providing access to fishing opportunities on the Allegheny River, Brokenstraw Creek an Irvine Run.

Water activities are a big draw to Buckaloons Recreation Area, including canoing, kayaying, rafting, and boating. The boat ramp provides easy access to the river. Buckaloons is the beginning of the second designated National Wild and Scenic RIver segment of the Allegheny River. The first segment is from Kinzua Dam to the Route 6 Glade Bridge on the east side of Warren, PA. The second segment runs from Buckaloons campground to Alcorn Island just upstream of Oil City, PA, a distance of nearly 50 miles. In this segment are the 6 islands of the Allegheny Islands Wilderness as well as many other publicly and privately owned islands. Several public boat launches are located within this segment to help you decide on the length of trip that’s right for you. The Allegheny is a “family-friendly” river, with little to no whitewater – perfect for beginners or a lazy day of floating. Hunting, fishing, and trapping are permitted in the areas around the campground, subject to rules of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. Fishing includes walleye, trout, and bass. There is also hiking along the Seneca Interpretive Trail within the campground or at nearby Anders Run Natural Area.
