(Don’t panic. But maybe put on a hoodie.)

It’s 9:03 p.m.
You just tried to fire up the stove... nothing.
The fridge is blinking. The furnace won’t kick on.
That’s when it hits you:
You forgot to refill the propane.

Now what?

Here’s what to do next—based on what you still can do, and what you’ve just lost.

🔥 First, What Runs on Propane?

  • Furnace

  • Fridge (if it's a 2-way or 3-way model)

  • Stove/oven

  • Water heater

  • Outdoor kitchen (maybe)

If the tank is really empty, all of these will either shut down—or act weird until you refill and re-pressurize the lines.

❄️ If It’s Cold Out

✅ Layer up fast

That warm air you had earlier? It’s fading. Throw on socks, hoodies, and hats—yes, even indoors.

✅ Use electric heat if you have hookups

Plug in a space heater if you’re at a powered site (or ask a neighbor—RVers are helpful). Just don’t overload your rig’s power.

✅ Insulate the windows

Throw up blankets, reflectix, or towels to trap heat inside. Every little bit helps.

✅ Don’t run your battery dry

If you’re boondocking and trying to use electric options, keep an eye on your battery power.

🍳 If You Need to Cook

✅ Electric skillet, hot plate, or microwave

If you’re plugged in, use what you’ve got. You’ll miss the propane stove—but you won’t go hungry.

✅ Eat cold

Cereal. Sandwiches. PB&J. Trail mix. Not glamorous, but it’ll do.

✅ Campfire cooking

Old-school? Sure. But it works—if fire bans allow it and you’ve got the gear.

🧊 If the Fridge Went Out

Most RV fridges auto-switch to propane. If you’re not on shore power, it’ll shut off when propane runs out.

✅ Move food to a cooler

Add ice or cold packs ASAP if the fridge is warming up.

✅ Plug into electric if possible

Get it running again on AC power until you can refill propane.

🛠 What Not to Do

  • Don’t try to “squeeze out” a few more drops—empty is empty.

  • Don’t use propane indoors from a grill or bottle—dangerous.

  • Don’t assume a refill station will be open late. Plan for the next morning.

⛽ What to Do Tomorrow

  • Take your tank or rig to a refill station

  • Call ahead to check hours

  • Ask your campground—some sell propane on-site

  • Reconnect and bleed the lines (light the stove burner for a few seconds to clear air)

💬 Final Thoughts

Forgetting to refill propane happens to every RVer at some point.
It’s a hassle—but it’s fixable. You’ll survive a night without toast.

And next time?
Set a reminder. Or better yet—carry a spare.
