What campers say
Prairie State Park showcases wide, restored tallgrass prairie with abundant wildflowers, varied trails and opportunities to see roaming bison from a safe distance. The nature center offers family-friendly, educational displays and helpful staff who point out wildlife and trail options. Amenities include picnic areas and a primitive campground with concrete pads, a spigot and nearby restrooms (buildings may not always have running water). Expect limited shade—bring water, sunscreen and bug spray—and follow posted rules about bison and pets. Snakes and animal droppings are sometimes encountered. Bison sightings are common but not guaranteed.
