Muir Woods National Monument is a serene sanctuary of ancient coast redwoods located in Marin County, California, approximately 12 miles north of San Francisco. Spanning 554 acres, it preserves one of the few remaining old-growth redwood forests in the Bay Area. Established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt, the monument is named in honor of naturalist John Muir.

Hours & Seasons

Open Daily: 8:00 AM – Sunset
Closed: Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
Best Visiting Times: Early mornings (8–9:30 AM) or late afternoons to avoid peak crowds.

Admission & Reservations

Entrance Fee: $15 per person; children 15 and under enter free.
Parking & Shuttle Reservations: Required for all vehicles and shuttle riders.

Trails & Hiking

Main Trail Loop: A 0.5-mile paved boardwalk, ideal for all visitors.
Ben Johnson Trail: A 1.5-mile historic trail recently restored with traditional techniques, leading to Deer Park Ridge.
Hillside and Fern Creek Trails: Connecting to Mount Tamalpais State Park for more challenging hikes.

Flora & Fauna

Redwoods: The tallest living trees, some over 1,200 years old.
Wildlife: Home to over 380 species, including Coho salmon, steelhead trout, and various bird species.

Visitor Amenities

Visitor Center: Offers exhibits, maps, and information on redwood ecology.
Muir Woods Trading Company Café: Serves deli food items and souvenirs in a rustic setting.
Restrooms: Located near the entrance and café.

Pets: Not permitted, except for service animals.
Cell Service: Limited to no reception in the park.
Smoking: Allowed only in designated areas.
