Max V. Shaul State Park is a compact, family-friendly campground praised for well-spaced, quiet sites and good trail access. Visitors note clean, recently upgraded bathhouses and daily-maintained showers, plus a small camp shop that sells wood and ice. The park offers a rentable picnic pavilion, playground and open fields—some sites have an eastern view good for stargazing. Practical tradeoffs: several sites are rocky (bring a mattress pad) and a few low-lying sites can flood in heavy rain. Dogs are permitted with proof of vaccination. It’s convenient for day trips to the Schoharie Valley, Catskills and Albany/Capitol area.
