Johnson Sauk Trail State Recreation Area offers a peaceful, photogenic setting with lake views, pine trees, varied wildlife and plenty of trails and roads for walking. The campground and facilities are generally well maintained and quiet; restrooms are clean and ADA sites are paved. Amenities include tent sites, electric hookups (including 30-amp), a small restaurant, and on-site showers and firewood (reported available). Practical tradeoffs: some hiking trails need upkeep and the lake is shallow and silted in places, which can make launching larger boats difficult; kayaking and shore fishing remain popular.
