Quiet, natural, unspoiled. Easy walk to the uncrowded beaches where you can walk forever with just the sound of the waves and the gulls. We camped there last September (23).

Spots are - finally - open at the new and improved Hunting Island The park continues its path forward next week, with the campground scheduled to reopen Feb. 1. The new-look campground includes 100 tent and RV sites with upgraded electrical hookups at each site. Reservations are being accepted. More than 80 oceanfront sites were lost during Hurricane Matthew in late 2016 and not replaced. Four bathhouses at the park were renovated after the storm and now open.
Note as of 2016/ 2017 this campground is closed for an unknown period of time following Hurricane Mathew. Plans are being made to redevelop the park. From news reports: Among the damages and plans at Hunting Island: ▪ The dunes were wiped out, destroying the oceanfront campground. A planned beach renourishment project is at least a year away. ▪ Massive debris removal is underway. About 75 percent of the cost will be covered by federal emergency money. ▪ 450 parking spots were lost, and only 200 of those are expected to be replaced. Park officials want to work with Beaufort County to find an off-site parking area for a shuttle service during the summer and busy weekends. ▪ Roads were badly damaged, some under water for a month after the storm. Repairs are estimated at $2.5 million. ▪ Two of the four bathroom and shower facilities were destroyed, and the remaining two damaged and now threatened by erosion. The needs come as the state park service had already identified $100 million in statewide deferred maintenance to facilities, roads, bridges and dams, its report to lawmakers said. Parks officials marked about $15 million of those projects as critical needs. Among the park system’s priorities are reopening the money-generating campgrounds at Hunting Island and Edisto Beach state parks, restoring Hunting Island beach access and cleaning up the lighthouse area. Parts of Hunting Island are already on the way back. The nature center and part of the fishing pier opened last year, not long after the storm. Hunting Island State Park is our go-to park on the South Carolina Coast. While we enjoy all the beach campground sites, our favorite is #47. It is a little small for our RV, a 34' class A, but we do fit. It is right on the beach, less than 20' from high tide. The campground has electric and water at each site and a camp store for last minute 'I forgot to pack' things. If you book site #47 and have a class A or C, I highly recommend going backwards down the loop road and pulling in forward. The view is much better and there is a lesser chance of getting stuck in the sand. On our latest trip, the camper before us had to be pulled out with a tractor.
This is one of the reasons we RV. An amazing location near Hilton Head with tree covered camping sites, access to the beach, wonderful trails, and a remote feel. Simply incredible. Always busy so make sure to have reservations.
