Houghton Lake State Forest Park is a small, primitive lakefront campground with quiet, scenic views and easy access to fishing. Sites are simple and fairly close together, with grassy areas, new firepits and a small, functional boat launch. Facilities include flushing toilets and potable water, though cleaning can be inconsistent, and there are no electrical hookups or showers. It operates first-come, first-served with affordable nightly rates and friendly, helpful hosts. Expect tradeoffs: some low-lying central sites can become swampy after rain and attract mosquitoes or flies, and there are limited kid-specific amenities.
