📖 About This Campground
Clearwater Campground is located along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, approximately 32 miles west of Cody, Wyoming, and 20 miles east of Yellowstone National Park's east entrance. Situated on the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River at an elevation of 6,000 feet, the campground offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.
Amenities and Features:
- Campsites: The campground offers 11 single-family campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, and food storage locker. Additionally, there is one group camping area that provides private parking, three large picnic tables, two food storage lockers, and a campfire circle.
- Facilities: Vault toilets and trash collection are provided. Please note that drinking water is not available; campers should bring their own supply. Firewood gathering is permitted within the area.
- Recreational Opportunities: The North Fork of the Shoshone River is a popular spot for fly-fishing, with species such as rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. The surrounding area also offers hiking, scenic driving, and wildlife viewing opportunities, with potential sightings of grizzly bears, deer, elk, bison, moose, foxes, coyotes, and bald eagles.
- Wildlife Safety: Grizzly bears frequent the area; therefore, all food, beverages, coolers, trash, and other attractants must be properly stored at all times.
- Utilities: Utility hookups are not available. Campers should ensure they have adequate water and have emptied black water tanks prior to arrival, as there is no water or dump station available at the campground.
- Vehicle Restrictions: Recreational use of off-road vehicles is prohibited within developed campgrounds. To operate on Forest Service roads, all off-road vehicles must have proper state registration or a Wyoming ORV sticker on display.
- Pahaska Tepee: Located west of the campground, Pahaska Tepee is home to Buffalo Bill's original hunting lodge, built in 1904. Tours are offered daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The site also offers guided horseback rides, a gift shop, restaurant, and lodging.
- Yellowstone National Park: The park's east entrance is 25 miles from the campground via the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, offering unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, breathtaking scenery, and unique geological features.
- City of Cody: This historic city offers a variety of dining, lodging, and shopping options. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center features extensive displays of Greater Yellowstone natural history, Plains Indians artifacts, western art, firearms, Buffalo Bill memorabilia, and a wild sheep exhibit.
