Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca New York takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley side toward Cayuga Lake. The upper park has a small lake, hiking trails through woodlands and along the gorge and rim, picnic areas and playing fields. The lower park has a primitive tent and small RV campground, pool and playing fields, beyond which is Larch Meadows.

The Gorge Trail is steep and stair-filled, offering the most striking views for those prepared for a strenuous climb; the Rim Trail provides an easier but less dramatic alternative. Trails are generally well maintained, and the park features picnic areas, a playground and nearby camping options, making it appealing to families and dog owners. Note practical tradeoffs: parking is typically a paid lot (about $10 per car) and the swimming area can be seasonal or occasionally closed for work.
