The park was very well maintained except for the water, there was a broken water line so getting water to our trailer was not easy. There was good cell service for AT&T, it has paved roads and the sites are gravel and mostly level with the sites being a good size. We would stay there again. They do charge higher for holiday weekends. We were there for 10 days from the July 2nd to July 12th. They had the best fire rings I have ever seen in a park!

Lots of wild life in the park and campgrounds. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Park Description

Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Oakwood Illinois offers two major campgrounds with partial and primitive tent and RV camping. Ample outdoor activities include hiking, canoeing, fishing for trout, camping, hunting and scuba diving.

Kickapoo State Park, located in the heart of east-central Illinois, offers campers a scenic and diverse retreat into nature. This beautiful park, spanning over 2,842 acres, is renowned for its rolling hills, clear lakes, and a variety of outdoor activities, making it an ideal destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.

Upon arriving at Kickapoo State Park, visitors are immediately captivated by the park’s lush landscapes and tranquil ambiance. The campground is well-maintained and offers a range of accommodations to suit different camping preferences. With 184 campsites, including both electric and non-electric options, as well as several rustic cabins, the park caters to tent campers, RV travelers, and those seeking a more comfortable stay. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for enjoying meals and evenings around the campfire under a sky filled with stars. The sites are spacious and shaded by mature trees, providing ample privacy and a sense of seclusion.

One of the main attractions of Kickapoo State Park is its abundance of water-based activities. The park boasts 22 deep, clear lakes, which are perfect for boating, fishing, and swimming. The park’s boat ramps make it easy to launch a boat and explore the tranquil waters. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular pursuits, allowing visitors to paddle along the scenic shoreline and discover hidden coves and inlets. For those who enjoy fishing, Kickapoo’s lakes are well-known for their excellent angling opportunities, with an abundance of species such as bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Anglers can cast their lines from the shore or a boat, enjoying a relaxing and rewarding day on the water.

Swimming is another favorite activity at Kickapoo State Park, with a designated swim beach providing a safe and enjoyable area for families to splash and play in the refreshing waters. The beach is well-maintained and offers picnic tables and grills nearby, making it a perfect spot for a family outing or a leisurely day by the water.

Hiking enthusiasts will find several trails within the park that showcase the natural beauty of the area. The Out and Back Trail is a favorite among visitors, offering a moderate hike through diverse terrains, including dense forests and scenic overlooks. The Clear Pond Trail provides a more leisurely experience, winding along the lakeshore and offering opportunities to observe local wildlife such as white-tailed deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. For a more immersive experience, the River Road Trail takes hikers through rich botanical areas, featuring a variety of native plants and trees, perfect for nature observation and photography.

In addition to hiking and water sports, Kickapoo State Park offers a range of other recreational activities. The park features several scenic picnic areas equipped with tables, grills, and shelters. These spots are perfect for family gatherings, offering a peaceful setting to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. The park also has playgrounds for children, making it an ideal destination for families with young kids. For those who enjoy outdoor games, the park provides facilities for volleyball, horseshoes, and disc golf, offering fun and engaging activities for all ages.

One of the unique aspects of Kickapoo State Park is its rich history and educational opportunities. The park’s visitor center offers interactive exhibits and programs that educate visitors about the area’s natural and cultural history. Rangers lead guided hikes, interpretive programs, and special events, providing a deeper understanding of the park’s significance and enhancing the overall experience.

Winter brings a different charm to Kickapoo State Park, offering activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. The park’s trails and lakes take on a serene and picturesque setting, providing a perfect backdrop for winter adventures.

In addition to its natural attractions, Kickapoo State Park offers modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The campground features clean restrooms, shower facilities, and a camp store stocked with essentials. For those who prefer a more rustic experience, the park also offers primitive group campsites, perfect for scouts or large family gatherings. The park staff is friendly and knowledgeable, providing information and assistance to help visitors make the most of their stay.

The nearby town of Danville adds to the charm of the camping experience. Visitors can explore local shops, enjoy home-cooked meals at town restaurants, and experience the warm hospitality of the local community. The town’s historic sites and cultural events provide an additional layer of interest for those looking to immerse themselves in the local heritage.

Camping at Kickapoo State Park is more than just an outdoor adventure; it’s an opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Illinois’ natural landscapes. Whether you’re hiking scenic trails, paddling on the lakes, fishing for your next big catch, or simply relaxing by the campfire, Kickapoo State Park offers an unforgettable escape into nature. With its diverse activities, stunning landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s no wonder that Kickapoo State Park is a cherished destination for campers of all ages.
