Staunton River State Park in Scottsburg Virginia offers woodlands, meadows and shoreline along the Dan and Staunton rivers. Cabins built in the 1930s by the CCC and a campground offer overnight lodging. Access to Virginia's largest lake, Buggs Island Lake, offers freshwater fishing and boating, along with water skiing and many other aquatic activities. Partial and primitive (no water, electric, or sewer) hookup RV and tent camping.

Staff and camp hosts are frequently praised as friendly and helpful, and the visitor center/gift shop is handy. It’s an internationally certified dark‑sky site with an observing field, loaner telescopes and periodic star‑parties, making it excellent for stargazing. Campsites include level pull‑throughs and some elevated, shaded sites. Practical tradeoffs: bathhouses are reported as clean but dated, the dump station can be limited, and some tent sites may feel close together on busy weekends.
