What campers say

San Mateo Campground is a clean, well-organized site with clearly laid-out spaces, brush or trees providing some privacy, and tidy restrooms. Rangers sell firewood and many sites have smokeless fire pits; beach access is via a roughly 1.5–2 mile trail rather than being oceanfront, and the campground is close enough to town for supplies. Expect tradeoffs: cell service can be spotty, some sites lack hookups and showers may require tokens/cash, and noise from nearby military training and freeway traffic has been reported at times. Overall it’s convenient and well-run if you’re prepared for those issues.

Took the church group here during the week. This campground is perfect for the kids and tents. High shrubs between sites provides space and privacy. Lots of room to run around. Not in a really pretty area but the beach is accessible via a hiking trail. Very pricey.
