Salt Plains State Park is a popular spot for digging selenite crystals, hiking marsh and forest trails, fishing and renting cabins or using lakeside access. The visitor center and park staff are frequently praised as friendly and informative, and the landscape offers peaceful views and good wildlife-watching. Digging is windy and can be messy—bring a shovel, bucket, change of clothes and water—and the site is well-suited to families and school groups. Campsites are generally spacious, but can be busy and occasionally noisy. Facilities and showers receive mixed reports; some visitors find them clean while others note mold or push-button shower issues.

📖 About This Campground

Salt Plains State Park is one of Oklahoma's most unique state parks. The barren landscape of the nearby Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of salt leftover from an ocean that covered Oklahoma in prehistoric times, and the saltwater lake in the park, Great Salt Plains Lake, is about half as salty as the ocean.
