What campers say

Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area sits high on Haleakala’s slopes and rewards the effort with cloud-forest scenery, large pines, birding and sweeping views. The access road is steep, winding and turns to dirt—many visitors find 4WD or high clearance advisable and rental restrictions may apply. Trails are plentiful but not rigorously waymarked, and cellular service can be absent, so bring a map or GPS. Facilities are basic (a single restroom and some covered seating; no potable water or grills), and nights can be chilly, so pack water, layers, food and suitable bedding.
