What campers say
Picacho State Recreation Area is a remote desert oasis on the Colorado River, reached by roughly 18–20 miles of rough, corrugated dirt road. The drive can be challenging and has damaged tires for some visitors, so high-clearance or 4WD is recommended though cautious drivers in ordinary cars have made it in. The campground offers shaded sites, boat ramps, fishing access, hiking trails, potable water in areas, clean restrooms and showers, and attentive rangers/hosts. It’s quiet and scenic — especially appealing in cooler months — but bring good tires, water, and be prepared for heat and rugged road conditions. Fees apply.
