Pettigrew State Park offers quiet, scenic access to Lake Phelps with extensive hiking and paddling opportunities. Trail mileage includes long, soft-surface routes out to Moccasin Overlook and Cypress Point, plus a well-maintained boardwalk along the lake. Campsites are generally spacious and easy to back into, each with a picnic table and fire ring, but there are no water, electric, or dump hookups. The park sits near the Somerset Plantation historic site and rangers are reported as friendly and helpful. Practical tradeoffs include occasional construction or temporary facility closures, seasonally low lake levels from drought, and potentially heavy insects in late spring and summer.
