Painted Rocks Campground, just off CO-67 near Woodland Park, is a small, well-kept site known for its colorful rock formations and short walk to Manitou Lake. Visitors frequently praise a friendly, attentive camp host who sells reasonably priced firewood on site. Campsites are spaced apart, which contributes to quiet evenings and natural distancing; the park has mostly reserved sites with a few first-come spots. Amenities include potable water, vault restrooms kept very clean, and regular trash service. Sites vary in shade and generally fit two vehicles. The campground is family- and pet-friendly and well suited to quiet, low-bug stays.

Painted Rocks Campground near Woodland Park, CO. Painted Rocks Campground is located a short distance from Manitou Lake Picnic Area and the Centennial Bike Trail in central Colorado. The rustic campground is named for the sandstone outcroppings in the area that resemble colorful streaks from an artist's paintbrush. This rustic campground is located approximately seven miles north of Woodland Park at 7800 ft. elevation and has 18 campsites with parking areas up to 30 ft. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There is drinking water available in the campground, as well as trash dumpsters and vault toilets. While most sites have ponderosa pine shade, some are in full sun. The campground opens for Memorial Day weekend and closes just after Labor Day weekend. This campground is a standard, non-electric site. All dates are weather dependent. Dates of operation below are dates visitors may expect full service.

Facilities

The campground offers single-family sites on two loops. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Roads and parking spurs are gravel.

Natural Features

The campground is nestled on the edge of a grassy meadow at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Most sites on the west loop are shaded by ponderosa pines, while sites on the east loop are more open and less shady.

Recreation

The paved, accessible Centennial Bike Trail is a half-mile from the campground. It connects to nearby Colorado and South Meadows Campgrounds, and leads to 5-acre Manitou Lake. Visitors enjoy riding bicycles on this trail to Manitou Lake for fishing and bird watching. Waterfowl and songbirds are often seen in the area. The nearby Rainbow Falls OHV Trail System and North Divide OHV Trail System are recommended for off-road vehicle enthusiasts.
