State officials are making plans to reopen shuttered campgrounds, expand lifeguard coverage and hire more seasonal workers, thanks to a new funding stream for Connecticut's 110 state parks. It will mark the first time in two years the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has had the financial resources to take such steps. Macedonia Brook State Park offers rugged, scenic hiking and a quiet, backcountry camping experience. Trails are steep and technical in places—expect hands-on scrambling and rewarding summit views—and cell service is limited except on higher ridges. Campsites are spacious and often tucked beside the brook, but the park is fairly rustic: carry-in sites, pit toilets, limited water at some wells, no showers. Black bears are frequently reported during season, so take normal precautions and secure food; rangers patrol evenings. The setting is peaceful and well maintained, but best for campers comfortable with off-grid conditions.
