Lone Pine Campground sits at the base of Mount Whitney with striking eastern Sierra views and dark skies ideal for stargazing. A stream runs through the loop, providing pleasant white noise and a few fishing spots. Sites are generally close together and many reviewers found spaces tight for larger RVs—30' rigs may be difficult to maneuver. Facilities are basic: vault toilets, coin showers, bear boxes, and onsite trash; cleanliness and maintenance reports vary. Cell service is limited and access roads can be steep or narrow. It’s a convenient base for visiting Alabama Hills, Whitney Portal, and nearby trails.

📖 About This Campground

Lone Pine Campground is located near the base of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States, offering unparalleled views of the mountain and surrounding peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. An abundance of fishing and hiking opportunities can be found both in and around Lone Pine.
Lone Pine is especially popular for RV camping. There are also a few tent-only sites and one tent-only group site that can accommodate up to 15 guests. Campsites are arranged around a single loop and have little to no shade or privacy due to the desert landscape. Firewood is available for purchase on-site, and showers are located 8 miles west of the campground at the Portal Store.
Located six miles west of the town of Lone Pine, California this campground is seven miles by road from the popular Whitney Portal Recreation Area.  The Whitney Portal National Recreation Trail begins at west end of the campground. Other popular activities near the campground include hiking, exploring the Alabama Hills movie history, and fishing nearby streams. Firewood for sale at the campground. Sites up to 40 feet long. 42 Single campsites, 1 Double site, and 1 Walkin Group site. Some sites may be available first come, first serve.
