This has got to be our favorite State Park so far…The way the campground is layed out, it’s almost like a national forest campground, which is what we like, because the campsites are nice and spread out. There is lots of cool stuff around, like a big swimming hole, and several natural artesian springs. Several of the campsites have horse stables for equestrians. There is also a nice little gift shop. Lee State Park is literally one mile from Interstate 20 at exit 123, and we will most definitely be back!

Park Description

Lee State Park in Bishopville South Carolina was built in 1935 by the CCC to provide riverside recreational opportunities and is a gateway to the Lynches River, a designated state scenic river. The park encompasses 2,839 acres of diverse habitat that includes a vast hardwood floodplain forest, numerous artesian springs, a millpond, and sand hills. Offers partial and primitive (no water, electric, or sewer) hookup RV, tent, and equestrian camping.

Lee State Park, located in the heart of South Carolina’s scenic Sandhills region, offers campers a peaceful and picturesque retreat. Spanning over 2,839 acres, this park is characterized by its lush woodlands, pristine wetlands, and the meandering Lynches River. Lee State Park provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and modern amenities, making it an ideal destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a serene outdoor experience.

Upon arriving at Lee State Park, visitors are immediately captivated by the park’s tranquil ambiance and diverse landscapes. The campground is well-maintained and offers a range of accommodations to suit different camping preferences. With 25 campsites, including both electric and non-electric options, the park caters to both tent campers and RV travelers. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for enjoying meals and evenings around the campfire under a canopy of stars. The sites are spacious and shaded by mature pines and hardwoods, providing ample privacy and a sense of seclusion.

One of the main attractions of Lee State Park is the beautiful Lynches River, which serves as the centerpiece of the park’s recreational activities. The river is ideal for boating, with a boat ramp making it easy to explore the calm waters. Canoeing and kayaking are popular pursuits, allowing visitors to paddle along the scenic river and discover hidden coves and inlets. For those who enjoy fishing, the Lynches River is home to species such as bass, bream, and catfish. Anglers can cast their lines from the riverbank or a boat, enjoying a relaxing and rewarding day on the water.

Hiking enthusiasts will find several trails within the park that showcase the natural beauty of the area. The park’s trails offer a moderate hike through diverse terrains, including dense forests, open meadows, and scenic wetlands. The Sandhills Trail is a favorite among visitors, winding through lush woodlands and offering opportunities to observe local wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species. The Floodplain Trail provides a more immersive experience, taking hikers through the park’s rich wetland areas, perfect for nature observation and photography.

In addition to hiking and water sports, Lee State Park offers a range of other recreational activities. The park features several scenic picnic areas equipped with tables, grills, and shelters, making them perfect for family gatherings and leisurely meals surrounded by nature. The park also has playgrounds for children, making it an ideal destination for families with young kids. For those who enjoy outdoor games, the park provides facilities for volleyball and horseshoes, offering fun and engaging activities for all ages.

One of the unique aspects of Lee State Park is its rich history and educational opportunities. The park is home to several structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s, including a bathhouse and a series of artesian wells. These historic features add a touch of nostalgia and charm to the park, providing a glimpse into the past and the craftsmanship of the CCC. The park’s visitor center offers interactive exhibits and programs that educate visitors about the area’s natural and cultural history. Rangers lead guided hikes, interpretive programs, and special events, providing a deeper understanding of the park’s significance and enhancing the overall experience.

Winter brings a different charm to Lee State Park, offering activities such as wildlife viewing, photography, and peaceful hikes through the frosty landscape. The park’s trails and river take on a serene and picturesque setting, providing a perfect backdrop for winter adventures.

In addition to its natural attractions, Lee State Park offers modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The campground features clean restrooms, shower facilities, and a camp store stocked with essentials. The friendly and knowledgeable park staff are always on hand to provide information and assistance, helping visitors make the most of their stay.

The nearby town of Bishopville adds to the charm of the camping experience. Visitors can explore local shops, enjoy home-cooked meals at town restaurants, and experience the warm hospitality of the local community. The town’s historic sites, including the South Carolina Cotton Museum and Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden, provide an additional layer of interest for those looking to immerse themselves in the local heritage.

Camping at Lee State Park is more than just an outdoor adventure; it’s an opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of South Carolina’s Sandhills region. Whether you’re hiking scenic trails, paddling on the river, fishing for your next big catch, or simply relaxing by the campfire, Lee State Park offers an unforgettable escape into nature. With its diverse activities, stunning landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s no wonder that Lee State Park is a cherished destination for campers of all ages.
