What campers say
Gauley Tailwaters Campground is a free, convenient spot near the Gauley River and Summersville Lake that many campers use as a put‑in for rafting and paddling. Sites are essentially a gravel parking strip with a picnic table and fire ring at each, so expect compacted sand/gravel surfaces, closely spaced sites, and limited privacy or shade; an air mattress or sleeping pad is recommended. Facilities are basic—pit toilets and porta‑potties on site, with flush toilets a short walk down the road—and there are no hookups or running water. It fills up by evening but is generally quiet and practical for short stays.
