Explore Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities on well-maintained, mostly easy-to-moderate trails with informative tree markers and some routes down to the river. It's family-friendly, with a playground, cabins, fishing, a tavern/brewpub with outdoor dog-friendly seating, and occasional programs like naturalist hikes. Seasonal events such as the Illuminights light walk are popular and require advance tickets; expect vendors and sometimes lines for hot drinks. Some adventure features (treetop climbing) skew toward older kids and adults, so younger children may prefer the playground and gentler trails. Staff are generally helpful and the grounds are kept clean.

Explore Park Campground near Roanoke Virginia provides primitive tent, electric hookup RV, cabin and yurt camping in a county run park. Operated by concessionaire the camping facilities opened in 2018 with additional amenities being added to the park as time progresses. Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway the campground provides a reasonably priced camping option in the area. Advanced reservations can be made online and are recommended. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails, disc golf and horseback riding. Accommodations include (from their website): Pod Cabins: These unique arched roof structures pack lots of amenities into a small space. Contains a queen size bed with mattress (ground level) and full size loft bunk with mattress (requires climbing a ladder). Served by a nearby bathhouse. These units contain heating and air conditioning. A refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are included. Linens are not included, but may be rented for an extra fee. Yurts: Sleep up to six in a spacious 16 foot wide yurt. A private sink and toilet are included except when winterized December through March.
