Double Cabin Campground, located approximately 25 miles north of Dubois, Wyoming, offers a serene retreat at the edge of the Washakie Wilderness within the Shoshone National Forest. This remote campground provides visitors with direct access to pristine wilderness areas, making it an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty. Amenities and Features:
  • Campsites: The campground features 14 sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. While there are no electrical hookups, potable water is available on-site. The maximum spur length is 32 feet, accommodating various camping setups.
  • Restrooms: Vault toilets are provided for campers' convenience.
  • Recreational Opportunities:
    • Hiking: Two trails depart northward from the campground into the Washakie Wilderness, offering opportunities to explore untouched landscapes. Additionally, the Frontier Creek Trail leads south along the wilderness boundary to a petrified forest, providing a unique hiking experience
    • Fishing: The nearby Wiggins Fork of the Wind River is renowned for its fishing opportunities, attracting anglers seeking a tranquil setting.
    • Wildlife Viewing: The area is home to diverse wildlife, including moose, black bears, and various bird species, offering ample opportunities for observation.
Access and Location:
  • Directions: From Dubois, take Horse Creek Road north for 7 miles to a "Y" intersection. Bear right and continue for 3.2 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right and proceed 2 miles to another intersection. Bear right again, staying on Forest Road 285, and continue for 13 miles to the campground.
  • Elevation: The campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet, resulting in cooler temperatures, especially during the night.
Additional Information:
  • Fees: There is no fee for camping at Double Cabin Campground.
  • Usage: The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is typically open from late June through September, depending on weather conditions.
  • Restrictions: Due to the presence of bears, proper food storage is mandatory. Campers are advised to bring bear spray and adhere to all safety guidelines.
