What campers say

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site is a scenic, wildlife-rich spot near Haines with a beautiful lake, inlet and a small boat launch popular for kayaking and fishing. The campground is rustic and spaced out with dry camping and vault toilets; services are limited. Visitors note a scenic drive, abundant birdlife and salmon runs, and frequent bear activity — wildlife viewing is common but sightings aren’t guaranteed. Access involves paved and gravel roads and may require a vehicle or an organized excursion; tours are available but can be costly. Good for solitude and nature-focused trips.

📖 About This Campground

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site northeast of Haines Alaska provides primitive tent and RV camping. Offers some of the best salmon fishing in Southeast Alaska, with four salmon runs, starting in mid-June and ending in mid-October. Because of the salmon spawning in the river and at this end of the lake, this area is also a bear highway.
