What campers say

Chekaka Recreation Area at Lake Mendocino offers a pleasant, scenic spot with a popular dam walk and good views of the lake and valley. Facilities include a small playground, clean restrooms, picnic areas with BBQ pits, and a southern boat ramp for launching and fishing. The south side is smaller with fewer campsites, parking and picnic space; several reports note campgrounds or gates closed for management or FEMA use, so check access ahead. Water is often very cold and swimming may be restricted; there are no lifeguards and some drop-offs, so exercise caution. Birdlife and quiet lakeside walks are common draws.
