What campers say
Big Knob State Forest Campground is a rustic, remote Lake Michigan shoreline site reached by several miles of gravel road. About twenty primitive sites (fire ring, picnic table) are shaded and some have sandy paths to the beach; a hand pump provides clear drinking water and pit toilets are generally kept reasonably clean. The setting is peaceful and scenic, especially in fall, but expect mosquitoes/horseflies in warmer months and occasional busy or noisy groups with generators. Practical tradeoffs: bring cash for fees, plan for a longer drive for supplies, and pick a lakeside site if you want immediate beach access.
