Afton State Park offers scenic rolling hills and a river valley with striking fall color; trails traverse shoreline, prairie and woods and are generally wide and well maintained, making the park popular for hiking, biking and winter activities nearby. Paved bike paths are smooth and picnic areas, a visitor center and potable water make visits convenient; there are camper cabins and camping access is seasonal (campground closed in winter). Expect steady daytime use but plenty of places to spread out. Be prepared for steep stair descents to the beach without railings, occasional confusing signage, and small parking or trail-surface inconsistencies.
