    Williamsburg Campark in Williamsburg Virginia offers full and partial hookup RV sites in an open field like setting on mowed grass. Tent sites and small RV sites are situated in a wooded section off the back.

    Roanoke Mountain Campground in Roanoke Virginia is located at Milepost 120.4 on the Blue Ridge Highway. The campground offer sprimitive tent and RV camping on a first come first served basis. Facilities include water, comfort stations with flush toilets and sinks but no showers or hook-ups.

    Cave Mountain Lake Family Campground in Natural Bridge Virginia is a US Forest Service campground nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, offering a rustic and peaceful camping getaway. Easy interstate access, close proximity to historic Lexington and access to Natural Bridge make Cave Mountain Lake an ideal spot. Offers primitive tent and RV camping in a wooded setting. Amenities at each campsite include a picnic table, lantern post and campfire ring with grill. Flush toilets and water spigots are located throughout the campground.

    The 7 acre lake offers opportunities for swimming in a designated area which includes a sand beach. Fishing for youth only (ages 15 and under) is open from April 1st through June 15th, then fishing is open to anglers of all ages with a valid Virginia fishing license, trout stamp and National Forest stamp for the remainder of the season. There are several piers around the lake for better fishing access. A number of opportunities for photography, birding, and wildlife viewing are available along the trails and water’s edge. Hiking trails surround the area, offering everything from a short walk around the lake to an all-day hike along the nearby ridges. The Panther Knob Trail starts beside the group picnic shelter and skirts the edge of the lake to the dam. The Wildcat Trail starts above campsites #41-42, climbs the mountain, then loops back to the campground above the volunteer host site in the upper camping loop. Visitors may also enjoy a day hike or backpacking trip on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, in the James River Face Wilderness, or in the Thunder Ridge Wilderness.

    As Otter Creek descends to the James River, the Blue Ridge Parkway dips to its lowest elevation, only 649 feet above sea level. This area’s abundant water and warmer temperatures support plant and animal communities that are unlike those found at other areas on the Parkway. A short walk along the Trail of Trees or a hike along the clear, cool waters of Otter Creek will give ample proof that there is more to the Blue Ridge Parkway than mountain-top vistas.

    Both RV and tent sites are available at this well-kept campground. Sites are equipped with grills, picnic tables and lantern posts. Amenities such as flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station are also at hand.
    In addition to the 39 sites available for advance reservation, 29 campsites are available on a first come, first served basis. Availability of first come, first served sites cannot be tracked through Recreation.gov. These sites must be booked in person at the campground kiosk.

     

    Chopawamsic Backcountry Area Campsites in Prince William Forest Park near Triangle Virginia (Dumfries) offers 8 hike in primitive tent sites situated along a 2 mile hiking trail. Managed by the National Park Service these campsites are free to use but do require a back-country permit.

    Oak Ridge Campground is a 100-site, wooded campground located in Prince William Forest Park, 35 miles southwest of Washington, DC. The park’s land was set aside during the Great Depression, and in 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoring the previously over-farmed acreage, converting it to recreational lands for public use. The CCC built trails, dams and cabins, making the park a wonderful place for recreation and relaxation.

    The campground is open March through November and accommodates tents, RVs and trailers. “Recreational vehicles are limited to 32 feet in length and 12 feet in height. Trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet in length and 12 feet in height. Each site has a picnic table, grill, lantern post and parking spur. Each loop has restrooms with sinks and flush toilets. Loop B also has showers. A and C unit comfort stations close down at the first part of November for winterizing. Loop B comfort station is open till the camp closure the first of December.

    The park offers many recreational activities, including hiking, biking, orienteering and fishing. Hikers enjoy exploring the park’s 37 miles of foot trails. The South Valley, Oak Ridge and Farms to Forest Trails all begin at the campground entrance.
    Bicyclists will find 21 miles of paved roads within the park, including the 12-mile Scenic Drive. Little traffic and a 25 m.p.h. speed limit make this a popular biking spot. A 3-mile, family-friendly paved bike lane leads to the campground. Mountain biking is also available on 10 miles of gravel fire roads.
