The nearby dam, built primarily for flood control for the Cranesnest and Pound Rivers, creates a breathtaking lake that is maintained at nearly 1,400 feet above sea level. This facility is an ideal spot for picnicking, water activities and hiking.

    Stony Fork, tucked in a dense forest setting, is located at the foot of Big Walker Mountain beside the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground, providing a serene setting for trout fishing and water play for visitors at the welcoming campground. The 1 mile Stony Fork Nature Trail takes campers through groves of pine and hardwoods, and the campground loop road makes for a scenic walk, too.

    Stony Fork sits in a valley of the Appalachians at a 2,400 foot elevation. Its creekside setting provides a peaceful soundtrack of running water. In springtime, wildflowers and rhododendron dot the region with spectacular colors, and fall is reliably scenic with its red and yellow foliage.

    The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing blooms of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red and gold foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlight views of Mount Rogers and many ridges and valleys. A horseshoe pit at the campground provides hours of fun for families. Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, approximately 5 miles, which leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain, then onto the Scenic Byway.

     

     

    Rudds Creek Park is located on John H. Kerr Reservoir, a 50,000-acre lake that extends 39 miles up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River in Virginia and North Carolina. Rudd’s Creek Campground is open April 1 – October 31. The Day Use Park, located across Hwy 58, is open year-around. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, was created with the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. Its 800 miles of wooded shoreline stretch across six counties in two states and offer countless recreation opportunities for visitors.

    There are 98 sites for tents or RVs, and amenities like hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station provide a comfortable camping experience. A swimming beach and picnic shelter make the campground ideal for families. The campground has its own boat ramp and courtesy dock for campers only. All electric sites have water hook-ups.

    Public lands around the lake are open to hunting with appropriate state licenses. Game species include whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, fox and raccoon. Resident waterfowl species include wood duck, black duck, mallard and Canadian geese. There are 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake that provide year-round opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding and more. The Robert Munford Trail is about 5.5 miles long and is multipurpose. A trailhead is located within 7 miles of Rudd’s Campground, at Eagle Point Landing. The lake is widely known for fishing, with large-mouth bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish available. Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries regulate fishing and hunting on the Virginia side.

    North Bend Park is located on John H. Kerr Reservoir, a 50,000-acre lake that extends 39 miles up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River in Virginia and North Carolina. North Bend is the largest park on Kerr Lake and is located at Kerr Dam and the Corps Visitor Assistance Center. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, was created with the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. Its 800 miles of wooded shoreline stretch across six counties and two states and offer countless recreation opportunities for visitors.

    Visitors to North Bend Park will enjoy the lakeside views and wildlife watching. More than 200 sites for tents or RVs, and amenities like hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station provide a comfortable camping experience. Each camping area has its own swim beach. North Bend Park also has a large day use area with picnic shelters and a swim beach, 3 boat launching ramps, an amphitheater, a disc golf course and a paved 1.5 mile bicycle trail.

    Salthouse Branch Campground is nestled on the shores of Philpott Lake in the rugged foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The park is located in a rural and sparsely populated part of Franklin County near the small community of Henry. Philpott Lake’s clear water and natural shoreline make it a unique place for visitors to enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking and camping.

    The park offers both camping and day-use facilities, including 44 family sites with electric and water hookups and one group picnic shelter with electric and water. Also available are 21 boat-in sites and 46 primitive sites without hookups. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. A beach, boat ramp, dock, playground, and amphitheater are also on-site.

    The lake provides visitors with great boating and swimming opportunities. Anglers enjoy fishing for large and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish. A 1/2-mile nature loop and a 1/2-mile interpretive trail are available in the campground. Many additional miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.

The lake’s steep, rocky banks meet beautiful mixed forests of oak, maple, hickory, pine and cedar. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area: Deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons, and a variety of songbirds and waterfowl are commonly viewed.

    The lake provides visitors with great boating and swimming opportunities. Anglers enjoy fishing for large and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Many miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.

    Morris Hill is a peaceful, rustic campground for groups of family and friends. The family campground is a family-friendly destination perched on a ridge above Lake Moomaw. Kids can have fun at the playground while older generations sit back and relax in the shade. The group sites accommodate up the 25 guests with space for up to eight tents. Campers can enjoy the wonders of camping with simple pleasures like s’mores on the campfire, berry picking in the woods, and watching for waterfowl and wildlife like deer. The convenient location near Lake Moomaw and sandy swim beaches, a fishing pier, boat ramp, and hiking and biking trails makes Morris Hill a popular spot.

    Family Campground: Most sites will fit any size RV. Campsite amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, a playground and drinking water. Group Sites: There is no water or electricity. Two fully accessible vault toilets, picnic tables and a group grill are on each group site. Coles Point Boat Ramp, the nearest boat ramp to Morris, is less than two miles away.

    The campground sits on a ridge overlooking Lake Moomaw. It is about a half-mile from the south end of the lake. Lake Moomaw, which flows from the Jackson River, is a cold-water 2,530-acre lake with an inviting swimming beach. Morris Hill is part of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests which spans across Virginia and parts of West Virginia and Kentucky. These forests protect 40 species of trees that are mostly Appalachian hardwood and mixed pine-hardwood forests, 60 species of mammals and 200 species of birds.

    Buffalo Park is a small day use and campground park, located on John H. Kerr Reservoir. The campground is open May 1 – September 30. The Day Use Park is open year-around.     Visitors to Buffalo Park will enjoy the lakeside views and the quaint park. The campground has 21 sites: 11 shady electric sites (1 is a double) and 10 primitive sites in an open field. Primitive sites are small and are open to walk-in campers. Two of the electric sites are paved and are accessible. Amenities include “family-style” individual restrooms with hot showers, sink and flush toilets. Park has a small dump station. Park has a swim beach, picnic shelter, and a boat ramp.

    Kerr Reservoir has approximately 48,000 acres of hardwood and pine forest and 50,000 acres of water. Buffalo Park has both shady sites and open field sites. The picnic shelter in the park has a spectacular view of the lake, where the Roanoke (Staunton) River meets the Dan.
    Public lands around the lake are open to hunting with appropriate state licenses. Game species include whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, fox and raccoon. Resident waterfowl species include wood duck, black duck, mallard and Canadian geese. The Army Corps of Engineers manages 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake that provide year-round opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding and more. Kerr Lake is widely known for fishing, with large-mouth bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish caught. Fishing and hunting are regulated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries on the Virginia side of the lake.

    Collegiate Peaks Campground is located 11 miles west of Buena Vista, Colorado, along Middle Cottonwood Creek near the top of Cottonwood Pass. The campground offers well-spaced campsites and scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. A commercial hot springs inn and spa is located about 5 miles east of the campground.

    “First come, first served” does not necessarily mean that the site will be available when you get there. Someone may get there before you. This is a popular campground and is normally full starting on Friday, sometimes as early as Thursday, so plan accordingly.

    Collegiate Peaks campground is heavily wooded with 56 campsites arranged along 3 loops. This campground offers visitors an opportunity for a quiet camping experience with plenty of space between campsites. The Middle Fork of Cottonwood Creek flows along the south side of the campground.

    Nearby hiking trails include Ptarmigan Lake and the Denny Creek Trail. The Ptarmigan Lake trailhead is located about 2.75 miles west of Collegiate Peaks campground. Denny Creek is located 1 mile west of the campground and accesses the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area.

    Explore Park Campground near Roanoke Virginia provides primitive tent, electric hookup RV, cabin and yurt camping in a county run park. Operated by concessionaire the camping facilities opened in 2018 with additional amenities being added to the park as time progresses. Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway the campground provides a reasonably priced camping option in the area. Advanced reservations can be made online and are recommended.

    The park has hiking and mountain biking trails, disc golf and horseback riding.

    Pod Cabins: These unique arched roof structures pack lots of amenities into a small space. Contains a queen size bed with mattress (ground level) and full size loft bunk with mattress (requires climbing a ladder). Served by a nearby bathhouse. These units contain heating and air conditioning. A refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are included. Linens are not included, but may be rented for an extra fee.

    Yurts: Sleep up to six in a spacious 16 foot wide yurt. A private sink and toilet are included except when winterized December through March.     Devils Backbone Brewing Company RV Park and Campground in Roseland Virginia offers full hookup RV camping and tent camping on the grounds of the popular brewer. Accessible for any size RV the campground is scheduled to open in 2018 and promises to be a popular place to stay. Close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park the camping area is set in an open setting right next to the brew pub.

    Clinch River Family Campground in Duffield Virginia offers full and partial hookup RV and tent camping in a scenic setting adjacent the namesake river. Located in a rural area surrounded by forest and mountains anglers and floater enjoy the river for recreation. Gravel roads and gravel backin pads with grass open areas and some shade trees.

    Shenandoah Acres Family Campground in Stuarts Draft Virginia provides family friendly camping with options for full hookup and partial hookup RV and tent camping. Tucked up against the scenic mountains on the east side of the Shenandoah Valley the campground was re-opened and upgraded by new owners. Guests can enjoy the local area including access to the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway. An onsite lake for fishing. A mix of seasonal sites and short term sites. Dirt roads and campsites.

    The large onsite lake and forest area are available to guests for daily enjoyment.
