Lewis and Clark State Park in western Iowa is both a picturesque park and a historic location along the Lewis and Clark expedition trail from 1804. The park is a popular destination for boating, fishing and other outdoor recreation, with an opportunity to engage in history at the Visitors Center, on a working keelboat and during the annual Lewis and Clark Festival each June.

    Yellow River State Forest in northeast Iowa is home to stunning views, beautiful woodlands, and meandering trout streams. Nestled in Iowa’s driftless area in Allamakee County, Yellow River offers numerous outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, equestrian riding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and more. Yellow River State Forest was first established in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corp and is home to Iowa’s only fire tower, built in 1963. Today, the forest is managed for numerous natural resource benefits and recreational opportunities.

    Stephens State Forest in south-central Iowa is Iowa’s largest state forest, with seven units totaling more than 15,500 acres in five counties. The forest’s primary function is to provide an example of forest management for Iowa woodland species. First established in the 1930s with tree plantings by the Civilian Conservation Corp, Stephens State Forest is also a backcountry destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking, horseback riding, camping and hunting.

    Shimek State Forest is located in Lee and Van Buren counties in southeast Iowa. The forest served as a base for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s and 1940s, where they planted thousands of acres of hardwoods and conifers for demonstration purposes. Named after early Iowa conservationist Dr. Bohumil Shimek, the forest offers bountiful outdoor recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking, hunting, equestrian riding, fishing and more. Today, the main goal of the forest is to implement effective forest management practices for the benefit of long-term natural resource stewardship.

    Boone County Fairgrounds Campground in Boone Iowa provides full, partial and primitive hookup RV and tent camping during the warmer months of fairgrounds property. Outside of scheduled events the campground should be available and advanced reservations can be made online. open setting with dirt and naturally irrigated grass.

    Two Bears Campground near Boone Iowa provides partial hookup RV and tent camping in a rural location. Situated in a “backyard” the small park is located in a rural setting in a small neighborhood. A work in progress the park is best accessed for units of 35′ or less but the park can accommodate larger units. The access road can flood during heavy rains.

    Small Town Campground in Mallard iowa offers full hookup RV sites adjacent to a dealership. Packed gravel roads and parking pads with grass surrounds the park can handle large RVs with all backin style sites. No restrooms or showers are available so self contained units are needed.

    Offshore RV Park in Bellevue Iowa provides 60 full and partial hookup (water and electric) RV camping sites adjacent to the banks of the Mississippi River. Managed by the accompanying hotel and conference center the park can accommodate most any sized RV and has rates ranging for daily to weekly and monthly. Pull thru and backin sites are available the RV park is located just off US 52 a short walk from the hotel and river side. (Rates start at $30 per night and become cheaper the longer you stay)

    Big G’s Campground in Delhi Iowa provides 40 full hookup RV sites and a handful of primitive sites situated near a small fishing lake. 20 of the sites are reserved for seasonal guests and 20 are for overnight/ short term guests. Opened in 2018 in the park is located on the southern end of Silver Lake. Packed gravel roads and grass parking pads with mowed grass surrounds. The park is close to the small town of Delhi.

    The park has a shower house and bathrooms available to guests. Capable of handling any sized RV guests have picnic tables and fire rings available.

    Littlefield Recreation Area Campground near Exira Iowa provides full, partial and primitive hookup RV and tent camping in a county run park situated around a recreational lake. Located in a rural setting the park is convenient to the interstate (I-80) and reasonably priced. Rates are $20 per night for full hook up, which includes electrical, water and sewer. The rest of the campsites are $17 per night, those do not include sewer.

    Multiple campgrounds are located around the lake. Some are closer to the shores than others. Restrooms with showers are available. Trails allow guests to explore this prairie spot. Some shade is available. Fire rings are available.

    Linn Grove Dam Area Camping in Linn Grove Iowa offers primitive tent camping in a county run park.

    The park includes areas on both sides of the Little Sioux River totaling 12 acres. The low head dam on the river provides great fishing. A boat ramp provides access to the river. Primitive camping is allowed. Pit toilets, drinking water and playground equipment are available.

    No dogs allowed with campers.

    Recreation: Fishing, Picnicking, Wildlife Viewed, Primitive Camping: $6.00 per night – First come, first served.

    Buena Vista County Conservation Park Campground 4 miles west of Linn Grove Iowa provides 18 electrical hookups (30 amp service), shower and flush toilets. Playground equipment and basketball courts are provided. The 308 acre parcel is dominantly bur oak timbered and also has arboretums and prairie/wildflower plantings which provide wildlife habitat. A creek meanders through the park with a nearby hiking trail. The park is considered a wildlife management area and driving of deer is permitted, but NO firearms are allowed. Bow hunting deer is also permitted during deer bow season. Hunting of species other than deer is prohibited. A new campground is being developed: 19 new electrical and water hook ups will be available, a new restroom, shower facility, playground equipment, and a new sewer dump.

    Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park Campground near Akron Ohio is a city run park with 29 partial (3 sites have electric) and primitive (remaining 26 sites) in a recently upgraded location. Close to Portage Lake State Park the campground has a playground pit toilets and a gray water dump station. No drinking water is available at this location. Sites can be reserved in advance with fees starting at $25+ per night. Stays are limited to 14 days max in order to keep the sites available and avoid long term tenant issues. Generators are not allowed to be used.

    River’s Bend Wildlife Area Campground 2 miles south of Akron Iowa provides 10 pull thru partial hookup RV and tent camping sites. Each site has electric and water available. A pit toiler, boat ramp and picnic pavilion are also available at this county run campground. Situated adjacent to a small fishing lake the rural setting and inexpensive price invite guests to relax and enjoy the area. Set in an open setting with gravel roads and parking pads.

    Hacklebarney Woods Campground near Villisca Iowa is a county run park with 14 partial hookup electric sites available on a first come first served basis. Situated near a small fishing lake open to electric only boats the park is a nice place to camp for a few nights. Pull thru and backin sites available. A hiking/ equestrian trail is a available as are 3 primitive equestrian campsites.

    From the county website: Campsites (50,30,20 amp) at $15.00 / night, restroom/shower house, and dump station (located 1/2 mile northwest of campground).  We do not accept reservations as our campsites are on a “First Come First Serve” basis.

    Equestrian Campground/Riding Trails – The equestrian area is located just north of the Hwy 34 / “V” Ave intersection.  This area is designated for trail riding and equestrian camping.  This campground offers two electrical sites ( $15.00 / night) and additional primitive camping ( $10.00 / night).  Daily trail rides are also permitted with the purchase of a  $1.00 / day trail riding fee.  The equestrian camping area and trails are subject to closure at the MCCB’s discretion based on recent rainfall and wet trail conditions.  Please call the MCCB office for more information.

    Criss Cove Campground south of Winterset Iowa is a county run campground offering 18 electric hookup RV and tent camping sites adjacent to a small pond. Inexpensive fees and first come first served nature make this a local favorite. Set in an open setting sites are backins off a single loop dirt road. Located in a rural area each site has a picnic table. the park is just off US 169.

    Pammel Park Campground near Winterset Iowa is a county run park with partial and primitive hookup RV and tent camping sites. Sites can be reserved in advance by calling the campground phone line. the campground is on the east side of the park with gravel roads and parking pads. Campsites are found in both an open and treed setting. the open sites are suitable for most any sized RV. Popular during the season with locals. The campground is close to the Middle River for soaking and fishing.

    Three Mile Recreational Area South Campground near Afton Iowa offers primitive hookup RV and tent camping next to a county run recreational lake. The large lake has multiple boat ramps and is popular with anglers. A shooting range is located on the north side of the lake. All sites are backins with paved roads and gravel parking pads. Set in an open setting the sites are easily accessed. Small trees provide some shade. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings and are available on a first come first served basis. 48 campsites, a shelter, playground, horseshoe pit, and the shower house located in it.
