Speaking Engagements: Campground association execs meet in South Carolina

The spring meeting of the Campground Association Management Professionals (CAMP) took place recently at the Oceanfront Holiday Inn in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

CAMP is an association specifically designed for campground association management executives.

“The purpose of the meeting is to get together and talk about the pertinent issues facing each of our state associations. We strive to share ideas that help us improve and streamline our associations as well as stay on top of the latest trends,” said President Beverly Gruber, executive director of the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA). “We typically have the same issues and we try to discuss solutions we’ve come across.”

The educational side of the meeting included a series of seminars. On the first day, Lori Severson from the Wisconsin association gave a presentation on BioCoding.

This workshop was derived from a unique program set up by Dorsey Levens, the Green Bay Packers legend. It is based on the premise that people only have the ability to train and retrain themselves to do what is right for them.

A special tour of Ocean Lakes Campground took place that afternoon. This campground is a six-time winner of National Association of RV Parks and Campground’s Mega Park of the Year Award. Following the tour, Marketing Director Barbara Krumm, presented a workshop on social media/public relations for associations.

Day two included a presentation by Mark Koep, from CampgroundViews.com, who spoke about “What’s New in the Campground Industry.”

He talked about the influx of younger campers (millennials) coming to campgrounds and creating the need for more technology as the phone becomes the center of everyone’s universe.

He also spoke about the gap that exists between RV manufacturers, dealers and campgrounds. “It all starts with the camper, and their expectations. Experience and habits have changed. They start their journey ‘online’ and want the finish to be value-packed,” Koep explained.

Besides the business meeting, three other group discussions included membership retention, keeping annual conferences vital, and the sharing of state information.

In addition to Gruber, CAMP’s executive committee includes:

  • Vice President Joann DelVescio, of the New Jersey Campground Owners Association
  • Treasurer Don Bennett, of the Campground Owners of New York
  • Secretary Lori Severson, of the Wisconsin Association of Campground Owners
  • Past President Michael Moore, of the Texas Association of Campground Owners

Sponsors of the spring CAMP meeting included AGS/TxAD, Anderson’s Brochure Distribution Service, Leavitt Insurance and the Wisconsin Association of Campground Owners.

The next CAMP meeting will be held in conjunction with the 2019 ARVC Convention in Knoxville, Tenn., in early November.
