The Florida Keys are an amazing RV destination! The first time we went we weren’t so sure about how it was going to go. Would our Rig fit on the roads? Could the bridges (there are a lot of them) hold the weight of our Class A 39 foot motorhome?!

We did some research and like going on any RV adventure to an unknown destination we put our fears of the unknown aside and went for it. Are we glad we did.

The Keys have become one of our favorite destinations. And all of our fears were for naught. The Bridges could handle us just fine and there was plenty of room for our rig. Actually driving on Highway 1 to get to our RV resort was down right easy!Drivingon1

We loved that there was only one main road and the majority of the RV parks are right off of the main road so no tricky side roads or directions. It is a straight shot down 1 with a left or a right into your RV park.

As you drive into the Keys you feel like you are entering a Caribbean Island. The whole place gives off this amazing vibe of relaxation, surf, and sun. The RV parks are nice and range in price – but are usually on the more expensive end ($100 or more a night – unless you stay at one of the State Parks). You can get that rate reduced if you visit in the off season or stay for a month at one place.

Recommended RV parks in the Keys:

1. Fiesta Key

FiestaKey

If you are looking for a decent park with all of the amenities you need and a decent price then I recommend Fiesta Key (See the Park Here)

Fiesta Key is located around mile marker 70. Mile Marker 0 starts in Key west and then Highway 1 takes you all the way to mile marker 100 – which is right before you are leaving the Keys to head back to the mainland.

Fiesta Key is on it’s on little piece of land that juts out into the ocean. The park is nice with a nice sized pool, boat dock, restaurant and tiki bar. Keep in mind there are no grocery stores for about 30 minutes. However the bike path is right across the street so you can take a nice bike ride if you would like.

2. Sunshine Key

Sunshine Key is around mile marker 50 so you are getting closer to Key West. But don’t let the 50 mile marker fool you – it is still going to take about 90 minutes to get into Key West. Sunshine Key is located just south of the 7 mile bridge and is very close to stores and restaurants.

We really enjoyed Sunset Grille which is a restaurant with a pool in the middle of it! Tons of bar games, music, and great food! And it is about 10 minutes from Sunshine Key just on the other side of the 7 mile bridge.

3. For luxury camping we recommend Point of View Key Largo

The resort is just a couple years old. The lot is pretty much one big gravel parking lot with shrubs in-between each site. Every site is a pull through so that was really nice and for the Keys they were a decent size.

What we really loved about it was the pool which was right next to the ocean. And the sunset was amazing! Plus they had a small beach area and also a couple nice piers that you could walk out on to look for manatee or just to sit on and hang your feet out over the water.

4. Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda

Bahia Honda is one of the multiple state parks on the Florida Keys. At Bahia Honda you can get a spot where your RV backs right up to the ocean! And the beach there is beautiful! The state parks are going to be your least expensive option when you are in the Keys. Be aware that you normally need to book 11 months out to get into the State Parks. And you can only stay for up to 14 days at a time. But it may be worth checking their site at anytime for cancelations or checking to see if they allow walk ins.

5. Marathon Marina RV Park

See it here

We did not stay at Marathon Marina RV Park. But we were told it was amazing! (Editro note: not many people do get to stay here they only have 9 sites… very exclusive)

6. El Mar RV Resort

We did not stay here but we were told that this is the most exclusive RV park in that it is tiny and stunning.

What to do in the Keys

Now that you have your RV park picked out let the fun begin! The things we love best about it is that amazing ocean breeze that you feel and the beautiful scenery that never gets old.

You can spend all of your time beaching it. The Keys are not known for the best beaches but we found a few that were worth having out at for the day: Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West. Sombrero Beach, Bahia Honda State Park Beach. Note these beaches don’t provide much shade so you may want to bring an umbrella – assuming it isn’t to windy – or be prepared with sunblock or swim shirts and hats.

There are a variety of local restaurants in the Keys and you are not going to find many chain restaurants so everything has a very local vibe to it. Plus the food is great! Fresh seafood anyone – and I mean FRESH like caught that day and brought to the restaurant from the boat dock that you are sitting right next to.

Key West also offers a variety of activities – outside of just the nightlife and drinking of Duvall Street. The Conch Train takes you on a great tour of the city and gives you a wonderful history of Key West. There is also the Harry Truman Little White House, Pirate Museum, Aquarium, and if you are into it lots of opportunities for snorkeling or scuba diving.

If you aren’t to sure about actually getting into the water to see the marine life. You can also take a glass bottom boat tour from John Pennenkamp state park. The ride out to the reef is beautiful and you see a ton of fish and coral through the glass bottom. Just be prepared – if yo are prone to motion sickness you want to come prepared.

Your time in the Keys can be what you want it to be. Relaxed and chilled hanging out by the pool and beach. Or filled with activities. It is up to you. But no matter what you do you are going to love the Caribbean vibe, the ocean breeze, and the amazing views of the crystal clear ocean that surrounds you on both sides!

If you haven’t been start making your plans now! And know that January and February are prime time so you may need to book a year or at least 6 months in advance.
