My Comments

KOA Waldport/Newport - My Rating is 5 out of 5 -- The KOA at Waldport/Newport is everything you HOPE to find in a KOA, plus terrific views of the river and coast. This KOA boasts arguably one of the nicest bathroom set-ups of any KOA I have been to. Individual bathrooms, some with their own shower. Literally your own bathroom (once you get it--might have to wait). Everything is clean and tidy and the spaces are well marked, include hedgework and wood structures for separation from your neighbors, and large spaces. The host that greeted me is a terrific, nice guy, and introduced me to three of the cats that unfortunately some cruel human abandoned at this KOA that he was now taking care of in the shop/office. They are up for adoption, in case you need a cute furball companion. Super nice guy, and even switched my stay here to a spot overlooking the water for no extra cost and no hassle. I am usually a more rugged, off-the-beaten-path type of guy, but every once in a while stopping in at the KOA is a necessary bit of luxury. At least it should be. And for that, the Waldport/Newport KOA is fantastic. Beautiful place.

Clam Beach County Park - My Rating is 3 out of 5 -- My perspective on the Clam Beach county campground is that this area provides value primarily in the summer, and also to two groups of people. 1) People like me, traveling through, needing a place to stay in their car. There were several other vehicles parked on this very cold night, and maybe some of them even paid like me (25$ per vehicle per night, 3 nights max). 2) People looking for an accessible beach where they can have a chill time and a beach fire, and do beach things. This is perfect for that. The area is actually pretty clever, and since I have only been in California a couple of years I cant say if this is a common set-up or not. It is really just a parking lot with campsites lined up around the edge, with beach access. There are spaces along the edge sort of "attached" to the sites, and parking spaces in the middle for just parking. The camping sites themselves provide "shoulder-to-shoulder" style spacing. The area is essentially just broken up into spaces with logs and each space is provided a fire pit and picnic table. And thats all there is to it. I found it perfect for floating through, but too parking lot to get more than 3 stars. And the bathroom. Yikes. The bathroom is just the typical hole in the ground with a roof over it, and was in very very poor condition when I was there. Hopefully this isnt a consistent quality of Humboldt County parks.

Olema RV Resort & Campground - My Rating is 3 out of 5 -- The location is ideal, but the execution is not what I expected. Very small spaces which made it extremely loud. The ground is not maintained to have adequate drainage so the tent sites are completely swamped and useless. Now, to be fair, I AM here in the WETTEST part of the California year, so it's understandable that the ground is muddy. However, I expected that since it was a private campground they could maintain the appropriate drainage to prevent this swamp condition, and I wouldn't have to park my Westy in the noisy "RV city". As it is, I am really only using this spot as a base to run on the glorious, nearby Pt Reyes trail systems, for which this campground is ideal. So, I give this a 3 star rating for its incredible location in spite of the noisy, swampy, cramped conditions.
